Competition in “Computational Linguistics”

The Department of "Professional Digitalization of Education" at Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, in collaboration with the Center for Distance Education, organized a student project competition titled "Computational Linguistics" on December 8, 2023.

This event commemorated the 80th anniversary of our University's Rector, Salima Kunanbayeva, dedicated to Digitalization Day, involving students from various university faculties.

Hosted at the Faculty of Translation and Philology, the "Computational Linguistics" project competition featured 13 teams (35 students) representing the Faculty of Translation & Philology and the Pedagogical Faculty of Foreign Languages, each team presenting under a unique name.

The competition's objectives were twofold:

First, to showcase students' accomplishments in Computational Linguistics, highlighting their prowess in natural language processing using Python programming and innovative assisted digital technologies for philological text analysis and linguistic translation work;

Second, to ignite humanities students' interest in computational linguistics and foster their engagement in scientific activities.

The competition in Computational Linguistics was orchestrated by the Department of Professional Digitalization of Education, led by teachers E. Tashkyn, T.E. Karpenko, L.T. Seri, and A.V. Trofimova. Supervising the students' projects were teachers T.E. Karpenko, A.D. Berdygulova, G.S. Eleussizova, L.T. Seri, and A.K. Adilbekova.

An expert panel (jury) comprising specialists in computer science, linguistics, and stylistics judged the competition: E. Tashkyn - Ph.D. in Technology; B.M. Mizamkhan - Ph.D., Associate Professor and Dean of Faculty of Translation and Philology; Andasbek N. - Master of Computer Science and coordinator of Data Science programs; K.K. Karimova - Ph.D., Associate Professor; A.A. Zhaparova - Master of Arts. Noteworthy linguistic analysis experts like Sh.O. Saimkulova, A.M. Kurkimbayeva, D.T. Kurmanbayeva, R.M. Baktiyarova, B.A. Sopieva and G.K. Kozhbaeva also attended the event.

The competition comprised two stages: the first involved project defense in either MS PPT presentation or website format, while the second stage included an interactive game test in Computational Linguistics (Kahoot). The jury evaluated projects and awarded the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners:

1st Place: "Unikko" led by Makovsky Bogdan (supervised by Karpenko T.E.)

2nd Place (Two Teams): “LinguaCode” led by Bekmaganbet Nurmukhambet (supervised by Seri L.T.) “Warriors” led by Muratova Amina, Zhumagaliev Sagyndyk, Karimzhanov Ruzibai (supervised by Karpenko T.E.)

3rd Place (Three Teams): “Lilith” led by Brezhnev Alena (supervised by Berdygulova A.D.) “Fixiki” led by Suleimenova Aidan, Kozhakhmet Adel, Izturganov Manas (supervised by Karpenko T.E.) “CyberThrone” led by Tulegenova Snezhanna, Nasyrova Karina (supervised by Karpenko T.E.)

The interactive test on "Computational Linguistics" added a playful and engaging dimension, testing students' knowledge and decision-making speed. Zhazylbekova Dilyara (D), Bekmaganbet Nurmukhambet, and Kozhakhmet Adel (Adele/Fixiki) from the Faculty of Translation & Philology emerged as the fastest and most knowledgeable participants in Kahoot.

All winners and participants received diplomas, certificates, and appreciation letters from KAZUMO's management, along with prizes from sponsors (Degirmen, Dial Stroy, OZZE Group).

The Computational Linguistics competition fostered immense interest and enthusiasm. Students presented unique ideas for linguistic analysis in literary works and texts, leveraging the power of Python programming for their findings, while the teachers exhibited keen professional interest in this innovative technological approach to text analysis and stylistic interpretation. Concurrently, teachers showcased professional intrigue toward a novel technological approach to text analysis and stylistic interpretation
