On February 17, 2026, Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages hosted the «Media Upside Down» media quest, inspired by the popular series Stranger Things. Under the guidance of Professor Bagilya Akhatova, journalism students developed case studies on fact-checking and media content creation to promote career guidance and critical thinking. The students not only designed the quest concept and media cases but also mentored teams throughout all stages as curators and moderators. Organizational support and coordination were provided by Olga Kim, Head of the Department of International Communications.

The quest brought together more than 130 11th-grade students from eight Almaty schools: Nos. 65, 87, 144, 136, 118, 36, 133, and the «Abay National School» RSI.
The program consisted of three stages where participants worked in teams to analyze real-world media cases, learn fact-based reporting, make informed decisions, and take responsibility for their information products. Graduates learned how public opinion is formed, how to distinguish facts from rumors, and why verification is crucial in journalism. Furthermore, participants gained inside perspective into the daily work and specific challenges of media professionals.

The high level of student engagement created a unique atmosphere. From the very first minutes, participants actively discussed tasks, proposed out-of-the-box solutions, and demonstrated strong teamwork. A dynamic and creative energy filled the classrooms as teams defended their positions, strived for excellence, and celebrated their progress through the stages.
The practical session was a highlight of the event: students produced their own media materials and videos, stepping into the roles of journalists, editors, and producers. This hands-on format allowed them to feel the weight of every word and realize the importance of high-quality, reliable information.

Following the quest, all participants gained valuable practical experience, and the top teams were awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place diplomas.
We extend our gratitude to the graduates and their teachers for their active participation. The participants' projects will be shared with their school principals to recognize the students' contributions and support their initiatives at the institutional level.
Such events foster media literacy, critical thinking, and professional orientation while strengthening the partnership between the university and the city's educational institutions.
