On April 3, 2026, the Department of International Law organized a mock trial with the participation of Elena Robertovna Kvan, a judge of District Court №2 of the Bostandyk District of Almaty, for second-year students enrolled in the educational programs “6B04201 – Jurisprudence” and “6B04202 – International Law.”

As part of the event, students assumed the roles of judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, defendant, and victim, examining a criminal case based on a real case previously considered by District Court № 2 of the Bostandyk District of Almaty. The subject matter of the case focused on sentencing in a criminal offense related to the illegal distribution of narcotic substances through so-called “dead drops.”
At the beginning of the session, Judge Elena Robertovna Kvan provided students with a detailed overview of the specifics of adjudicating criminal cases of this category, highlighting practical aspects of court proceedings, common mistakes made by the parties, and the importance of соблюдение procedural rules. She also offered valuable recommendations on building a legal position and conducting courtroom proceedings effectively.

The mock trial format generated strong interest among the students: participants were actively engaged in the process, presented arguments, analyzed evidence, asked questions, and made independent decisions. Each student had the opportunity to experience the responsibility associated with their procedural role and to gain practical insight into judicial proceedings.
Following the simulation, a discussion session was held during which the judge provided feedback, reviewed mistakes, and highlighted the strengths of the students’ performances, which proved especially valuable for their professional development.

The event was conducted in a dynamic and professional atmosphere closely resembling real judicial practice. This format of learning not only reinforces theoretical knowledge but also develops practical skills, critical thinking, legal communication, confidence in public speaking, and the ability to make well-reasoned decisions in conditions approximating real professional activity.
