By the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 19, 2024 No. 20, amendments were made to the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated November 23, 2000 No. 1749 "On the procedure for calculating time in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan."
The document establishes that on the territory of the republic, the calculation of the time reproduced, stored and transmitted by the State Primary Standard of Time and Frequency of the Republic of Kazakhstan is carried out according to the international time zone system, using a single time zone throughout the country from 00:00 on March 1, 2024. Thus, the 5th time zone (UTC + 5) will be applied to the entire territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
According to the changes, local executive bodies and residents of Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, Akmola, Almaty, Zhambyl, Karaganda, Kostanay, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, Turkestan, East Kazakhstan regions and Abay, Zhetіsu, Ulytau regions on the night of February 29, 2024 to March 1, 2024 (at 00:00 hours) must be transferred local time one hour ago.
Currently, Kazakhstan uses two time zones UTC + 5 and UTC + 6. Most of the country, with the exception of the western regions, is in the UTC + 6 zone. According to experts, the UTC + 6 time zone does not correspond to natural solar time, which negatively affects biological rhythms and human health. Experts also believe that in addition to the benefits of health, the establishment of a single time zone will eliminate temporary barriers between residents of different regions of the republic, improve the coordination of transport and other communications, and favorably affect business, as well as the interaction of state bodies and emergency services.
The decree is put into effect on March 1, 2024.
