WorldSkills International is a non-profit association founded in 1946, whose mission is to raise the status and standards of professional training and qualifications around the world, popularize and increase the prestige of vocational professions. Its main activity is organizing and conducting professional competitions at various levels for young people under 22. Today, 80 countries, including Kazakhstan, take part in the organization’s activities.
On November 23 - 25, 2023, the eighth championship of professional skills “WorldSkills Kazakhstan 2023” took place in Astana. Within the three days of the competition, students from colleges and universities across the country showed their skills in 30 competencies.
Our university was represented at the championship in the “Restaurant Service” competency, by a second-year student of the educational program “Restaurant and Hotel Business” Kalmenova Meruert. Meruert successfully passed 4 competitive stages: Bar, Barista, Bistro service, Banquet, where the professional skills, abilities and knowledge of the participants were assessed, such as the ability to work with several tables serving food and drinks within a set period of time, manage a group of guests at banquet, skills in preparing drinks and dishes according to the given recipes and fantasy ones - according to the participants’ own recipes; knowledge of a coffee shop with a full coffee menu, skills in working in a cocktail bar and barista lounge. Based on the results of the championship, Kalmenova Meruert was awarded a trip to France to the WorldSkills Lyon 2024 championship.
Participation in this event has two big results: young people not only become competition winners, but also attract the attention of employers. This is a great opportunity for everyone involved.
