The idea of creating a Kazakh-English dictionary was first proposed in 2011 by the US Embassy in Kazakhstan. The project was completed in 2014 and published as a Kazakh-English online dictionary. At the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Kemelyevich Tokayev, work on the dictionary was resumed at the National Translation Bureau, within the framework of which the dictionary was supplemented, revised, edited and at the end of 2023 published in 10,000 copies under the name Qxford Qazaq Dictionary.
About 60 thousand words are included in the lexicon of the Kazakh-English and English-Kazakh dictionaries, which are published for the first time in our country. The dictionary includes not only outdated words that have become archaisms, but also expressions that add national flavor. In addition, a classification of each word is provided and its area of use is clearly indicated.
More than 50 experienced linguists worked on the publication of the dictionary, among whom were teachers and students of the Faculty of Translation and Philology of the Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages. Mizamkhan B. – translator, Kazakh-English editor; translators: Aldabergenova A., Duisenbaev M., Iskhan B., Kuanyshbekova A., Kadirsizova G., Muminov N., Nurkabaeva G., Saimkulova Sh., Tazhigulova M., Usenov E., Chokaeva T. and translators of other large organizations. Today, the University library has been replenished with 65 copies of the dictionary. We congratulate our university on a very significant acquisition, and wish our colleagues, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Philology, Baglan Mizamkhan, success and new achievements!
